Stowe, Vermont
In the heart of New England ~ Stowe, Vermont USA

Located with 1 hour by plane from New York or Boston, Stowe is a recognized world-class haven for those craving an escape from urban stress and has long attracted residents seeking outdoor activities and community spirit; they blazed ski trails, hiked the rugged Green Mountains and developed local arts and culture. Still it retains the atmosphere of a New England town built around a white-steepled church, where residents greet each other and visitors with the same warmth.

In June, 1763, when Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire designated 64 men as "Proprietors" and Stowe became a 'chartered town'. However, none of this original group remained in the town and no formal settlement occurred until 1793 - two years after Vermont, as the fourteenth state, joined the original thirteen of the United States of America.

The town lies in a broad, fertile valley between Mt. Mansfield and other peaks of the Green Mountains on the west, and the Worcester Range or "Hogback" Mountains on the east. The Waterbury River (or Little River, as it is presently known) with its main East and West branches and various tributaries, flows southward and, above Waterbury Center, empties into the large Reservoir created by the Flood Control Dam. From thence the "Little River" flows southward and empties into the westward flowing Winooski River west of the Village of Waterbury.

Though Stowe enjoys an international reputation as a winter destination, it is just as exciting in summer. Sparkling streams attract anglers, splashers, and paddlers. Horseback riders gallop through wildflower strewn meadows. Bikers and hikers take to the Recreation Path and to more challenging mountain trails as well. Stowe's golf and tennis offer challenges for newcomer and old pro alike.

Autumn in Stowe deserves special mention. Vermont is world-famous for its spectacular fall foliage, and Stowe is Vermont 's most beautiful and dramatic fall foliage viewing venue.

STOWE MOUNTAIN RESORT ~ RECENT ENVIRONMENTAL ACHEIVEMENTS

Spruce Peak at Stowe, Stowe Mountain Resort's new base-area development, has earned two distinct honors from Audubon International, a non-profit environmental organization headquartered in New York State: Spruce Peak at Stowe is the first mountain resort development in the United States to earn Audubon's 'Green Community Award' and the first in Vermont to have its golf course designated as an Audubon 'Signature Sanctuary.'

Members of Audubon International's Sustainable Communities Program are eligible for the Green Community award, which recognizes environmental achievement and is a milestone en route to earning rigorous designation as a Certified Audubon Sustainable Community. Spruce Peak first joined the Sustainable Communities Program in early 2006, and is the first mountain resort in the nation to earn the award.

"The Spruce Peak at Stowe project is the result of many years of collaborative planning and coordination with many varied interests, including all of Vermont's major environmental organizations," said Robert Apple, the resort's Planning Manager. "Now as the vision turns into reality we are proud to earn this award from Audubon International and look forward to a continued focus on sustainable development principles throughout the resort."
